The Scandal Of Modern
Evangelism
FOOTNOTES
1 The
most common scripture used in modern evangelism is "Whosoever shall
call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." If you read
Romans 10:13 in context, you'll find Paul cites Joel 2:32 to emphasize
that ALL may approach God equally. Jew, Gentile, male, female, free men
and slaves, all can, irrespective of their social or economic status,
be saved. As he says in another place, "Here
there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian,
slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all". Col
3:11 "Calling on the the name of the Lord" in context, refers
to the illuminated sinner responding to the word of faith Paul preached."...if
you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that
God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart
one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made
unto salvation. For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him
will not be put to shame." Rom 10:9-11 "Believing on
Jesus," doesn't just mean believing He was an historical person.
It means partaking of His sacrifice. Please go to What
is Baptism? for more on this subject.

10"As
there is no need to tell lovers what to do and say, so is there no need
for any rules to those who are in love with Christ. The only word that
covers all this is faith. It removes all the inhibitions arising from
worry and sets man in such relationship to God and Christ that all else
will come of itself." Pg 178 Here I

13 "Definite and complete"
includes not only a definite and complete atonement, but also the indwelling
of the Holy Spirit and the supernatural impartation of a new nature which
overcomes the old nature. "Lack of sanctification" was never
used as an excuse for backsliding. Sanctification was always taught as
a going forward from "glory to glory." No pre-20th century
evangelist would ever say a person was backslidden if they never showed
any sign of having forslidden. They would be told they were
never saved.

"It is marvellous credulity, to take every
excitement in the name of religion, for the work of God's Spirit. It is
an enourmous demand on our charity, when we are asked in mass, as true
and solid, the wholesale conversions that are made in this way."

25 The Sunday organization reported that
667 decision cards were sent to Moody's church. 373 were listed as conversions,
and 294 were listed as "reconsecrations". (what modern evangelists
call "rededications") Only 508 cards were received by Moody's
church. After a four month follow-up, here's how the supposed conversions
and "reconsecrations" turned out: 7 said they only went forward
to shake hands with Billy Sunday. 33 said they were saved before the campaign.
14 said they accepted Christ at the campaign. 6 were led to Christ at
the follow-up. 3 refused to accept Christ at follow-up. 40 were unable
to find at home. 143 were not at the address given. 76 were only prayed
for at follow-up. 15 had moved and left no address. 6 went to war. 126
were already members of Moody's church. 39 were not yet reached.

31"Moreover, in the next place we are
dead as to the pursuits and aims of the sinning and ungodly life. Brethren,
are any of you that profess to be God's servants living for yourselves?
Then you are not God's servants; for he that is really born again lives
unto God: the object of his life is the glory of God and the good of his
fellow-men." Charles Spurgeon sermon 1627
