How Matthew Houston
Relates to the
Heresy of Decisional Regeneration

Matthew Houston was one of the Presbyterian ministers who left the Presbyterian Church after disagreements over the handling of Presbyterian Sacramental Meetings in Kentucky. He was educated by William Graham at Liberty Hall. He was one of the prominent Presbyterian ministers to enthusiastically participated in the famous 1801 Cane Ridge Revival, where Barton W. Stone was the host pastor.

Houston joined Stone and other revivalist ministers in withdrawing from the jurisdiction of the Synod of Kentucky. They temporarily formed the autonomous Springfield Presbytery in 1803, before officially dissolving it with the famous Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery on June 28,1804, which marked their break from mainstream Presbyterianism

Joining the Shakers: Shortly after leaving the Presbyterian Church and joining Stone’s Restorationist movement, Houston, along with fellow revivalists Richard McNemar and John Dunlevy, left Stone's group in 1805 to join the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly known as the Shakers
